Our Perspective
The Complexity of Care
In many respects, cotton reflects the intricate history of the healthcare industry. It is soft, yet its burs can leave lasting scars. Despite its successes, the healthcare sector has often symbolized pain, exploitation, and exclusion for many communities. However, the roots of care extend beyond any industry; long before hospitals and degree programs, there were medicine women, doulas, and family remedies. Across cultures, people have always sought ways to care for their loved ones and communities.
While the industry surrounding cotton was causing harm, the plant’s roots were a source of medicine, granting freedom and empowerment. Its flower mends wounds, absorbs toxins, and soften falls. Just as we can reclaim the beauty and utility of the cotton plant, we also reclaim the industry dedicated to caring for one another.
